Self Care: BACE Method Pt 2

Welcome back for Self Care Part Two of the BACE method. Last post, we talked about body care. I hope you did your homework because today, we are moving onto achievement (Wong, 2020). Achievement refers to things that make us feel accomplished and good about ourselves. These can be big or small as long as you feel satisfied afterwards. Let’s look at some different areas of life where you can get that sense of achievement!

Hobbies: We can feel a sense of achievement while participating in our hobbies. I love to read and I am so pleased with myself when I finish a book. Some other options can be puzzles,  video games or perfecting a song on an instrument. Maybe you feel really accomplished after a workout, finishing a sewing project, or after doing some gardening. Personally, I’m a big fan of cooking and baking because I get to eat something good and have that feeling of satisfaction.

Home: I feel like there’s always things I can be getting done in my living space between chores and projects. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like doing dishes or making my bed, but I feel really good after it’s done. Have there been any lingering projects you’ve been putting off? Are there any chores that make you feel good after doing them? For some this can be wiping down the kitchen, taking out the garbage, rearranging bookshelves, or putting clothes away.

School & Work: If you’re in school, you’re usually getting homework and projects assigned which when finished, can definitely make you feel accomplished. If you’re not in school, finishing projects at work can be really satisfying. I want you to think about what in your school or work gives you a sense of achievement. Is there a goal you're working towards (good grades, graduation, promotion, new skill, etc)? Is there anything you want to achieve in the next 6 months to year in your career? Is there anything in your studies/career you want to learn more about?

Learning Something New: When was the last time you tried something new? As adults, it can be scary to try something new because we don’t want to be bad at whatever it is. Give yourself some grace. Some examples of this can be learning a new language, playing a new sport, researching a topic, trying a new recipe from TikTok, or going to a museum by yourself.

Your homework this week is to make a list of the things that give you a sense of achievement, whether it’s a long term goal you’re working towards or a small daily thing you need to get gone. Can you identify different activities for hobbies, home, work/school, and something new? How often are you doing them and feeling satisfied? Do you need to prioritize or increase the frequency of any of the activities?
